Fireplaces and stoves are an indispensable and traditional attribute of country cottages and village houses. They are an important part of the heating system and are installed to ensure optimal temperature conditions. However, they have another important function - they often become the highlight of the interior composition and its main decorative element, therefore, when choosing a finishing material, an important role is played by the aesthetic component.

What tasks does facing tiles for the fireplace?

  • Increased heat transfer performance;
  • Reducing the time required to heat the room;
  • Decoration;
  • Simplification of maintenance work;

For most modern people, building a fireplace or stove in a home causes positive emotions and reduces stress.

What should be the tile for facing the fireplace?

Since during the operation of the heating system there is a sharp temperature jump, most of the materials are simply not able to withstand thermal effects, therefore, to finish the furnaces, choose a special tile, which should be:

  • Heat resistant. Evidence that the tile has these properties is the capital letter "T", which is applied to the packaging material. High-quality heat-resistant tiles for stoves and fireplaces can withstand heating up to 1000 degrees. If the letter 1 is included in the letter, this means that the ceramics was subjected to single firing, the figure 2 indicates that the tile was tempered twice in a special furnace.
  • Strong. Facing tiles for stoves and fireplaces must be at least 8 mm thick. Otherwise, it simply cracks after the first heating.
  • Heat conductive. The more heat the fireplace tile transmits, the faster the room will heat up.
  • Dense. The correct fireproof tile for a fireplace consists of microscopically small pores.
  • Wear resistant. This indicator is determined by the established standard PEI. For finishing of fireplaces material with markings IV and V is used.
  • Moistureproof. The optimal water absorption coefficient is no more than 3 percent.
  • Eco-friendly. The fact is that during heating, products can release some substances, so it is extremely important that heat-resistant tiles made of terracotta do not contain harmful compounds, which, when ingested, accumulate and cause serious diseases.
  • Not prone to expansion during thermal exposure. The critical threshold for this indicator is 7-8 percent.
  • Beautiful Of course, the tile for facing the fireplace must bear the aesthetic load, otherwise the design of the room will look dull and boring.

Heat-resistant tiles: types and varieties

Today, the building materials market is a fairly extensive range of products for lining heating facilities. Ceramic tiles for stoves and fireplaces have variations.

Tile

This option is considered the most popular and sought after, but experts say that this type does not have the highest heat resistance or density. Even the most heat-resistant tiles are very dependent on temperature changes. Some homeowners inadvertently choose glazed tile. During operation, the surface can crack and completely lose its sophisticated appearance. Also, you should not buy products whose dimensions exceed 20 * 20 cm.

These models are completely unsuitable for adaptation in cold rooms, therefore finishing of the fireplace with tiles made of tile, for example, in guest houses or summer kitchens is unacceptable.

Clinker fireplace tile

Experts believe that the decision to veneer the surface of electric heater or furnace with clinker is the most successful and advantageous. This material has a high density, because it is made of high-grade refractory clay, exposed to high temperatures. In addition to the important functional advantages, you can safely include an incredibly beautiful design in the list of advantages. Attention buyers presented a large number of colors. Tonal uniform coating gives the tile increased wear resistance, since under the decorative surface small defects in the form of cracks on the clay are imperceptible. The only disadvantage of this material is its inability to coexist with a brick. They have different thermal expansion characteristics, as a result of which the tile is often deformed and quickly collapses.

Majolica

Unlike the clinker tile, which is also used in the manufacture of high-firing clay, it has a spectacular layer of painted glaze. Such products benefit from the rest, rather, in decorative terms, but because of their density and porosity, they cannot be lined with majolica, which are rarely heated by majolica.

Metlahskaya tile

Here it is, rather, not about the name of the material, but about the properties of the products. Ceramic tiles for fireplaces of this type should have a matte surface, uniform color and zero water absorption coefficient. It also has an incredibly beautiful design, intricate textures and ornaments are applied to the surface of the “models”.

Tile tiles

The main advantages of this facing are environmental friendliness and impeccable design. It is because of these indicators and pay attention to the tiles. In modern stores you can buy fine handmade materials. With the help of them you can create truly unique objects of art.

Terracotta tiles

It is made by hand or mechanized red clay. The glaze is not applied to the surface of the products, so the color palette is not so diverse: terracotta tiles have only a few varieties and are available in yellow, pink and red-brown colors. That is why often there are options that imitate stones or bricks.

With regard to functional features, terracotta models withstand temperatures up to 1100 degrees, have high heat resistance, impact resistance, heat transfer and resistance to temperature changes. Taking into account thermo-expanding abilities, experts recommend to finish it with natural brick ovens.

Porcelain stoneware

One of the strongest and most durable materials. To become so strong, it burns in a special furnace at a temperature of 1200-1300 degrees. Components such as stone chips, various types of clay and other "useful" additives are involved in the manufacturing process. This heat-resistant tile has the highest hardness coefficients in its class (on a 10-point Mohs scale, it is marked 8), the burned mass practically does not absorb water (0.5%), resists temperature changes excellently and, unlike terra-cotta tiles, is resistant to chemical means.

Chamotte tile

The tile of this type has a striking property of acid resistance, and therefore is used in most cases in the respective rooms. Among the vast number of advantages one can distinguish the ability to exist peacefully in rooms that are rarely heated and where the subzero temperature is kept almost all the time. Also noteworthy is the resistance to deformation, the thickness of the products and the surface roughness.

Some styling information

When choosing a tile for a stove or a fireplace, pay attention not only to the quality of materials (for example, facing of a fireplace with gypsum tile is impossible in principle), but also on the wrong side. It should be marked with special notches to improve adhesion to the surface of the structure.

Strengthen the design can be using aluminum corners. Also a metal net with cells no larger than 150 * 150 mm is suitable. It is laid between the tile and the concrete or brick surface of the furnace and is attached to the screws or nails.

Before you start laying the lining, you must cover the network with a mixture of cement, clay and sand. Only glue based on aluminate cement can be used as an adhesive, to which various chemical and polymeric additives are added.

To conceal the joints, the grout is used, and to make the distance between the trim elements the same, special crosses are used.

As for the cost of materials, in the budget segment the most popular are fireclay, terracotta and clinker. The luxury class includes tile and natural marble. Least often buy porcelain and tile.
