The use of natural stone, such as marble and granite, creates a rich monumental view of buildings, distinguished by their durability and external aesthetics. To use natural stone for finishing buildings is an expensive and time-consuming pleasure. Therefore, now imitation of surfaces under natural stone, which is created using marble plaster, is used.

What is marble plaster and its properties

Decorative marble plaster received its name thanks to a filler made from crumbs made of marble and its dust combined with lime powder. The composition also includes:

  • synthetic acrylic copolymer in the form of an aqueous emulsion;
  • water-repellent and antiseptic, and other additives;
  • preservatives and coloring pigments.

Due to this composition, the coating on the basis of marble chips gives the surface a unique texture and is used as a finishing finish. This material has excellent adhesive properties and combines well with brick, concrete, plasterboard and other surfaces. Decorative marble “stucco” plaster does not require laborious work and can be used to decorate the walls of the kitchen, bathroom and other rooms inside the building, as well as for facing the external sides of buildings. This finish gives the surface the following properties:

  • high strength and hardness, providing resistance to mechanical damage;
  • resistance to climatic influences: moisture and temperature changes;
  • good vapor permeability allowing walls to "breathe";
  • resistance to UFL, chemical agents and fire;
  • environmental safety;
  • varied texture and color scheme.

Types of marble plaster

The finishing material based on marble chips is divided according to the size of the filler fraction. The grains of crushed marble should be about the same size, so the crumb is pre-calibrated. This is necessary so that the surface covered with chips has the same thickness and is even.

There is the following unit of plaster in terms of grain size:

  • fine-grained, having a fraction size of 0.2 to 1 mm;
  • medium-grained (fraction from 1 to 3 mm);
  • coarse-grained (fraction from 3 to 5 mm).

The purpose of the marble coating depends on the size of the grain fraction. Fine-grained material is used for interior decoration, and medium-grained and coarse-grained composition is used for decorative coating of facades.

The stucco with marble chips is also subdivided according to the color index. If previously only a crumb was used, having natural shades, often non-uniform in color, now many tint colors are used, which give the filler a shade of natural character or a color different from natural marble. For this purpose, light-resistant pigment dyes are used that do not fade from sunlight and retain the original color from 15 to 25 years of operation of the coating.

The use of tinting colors allows you to create a wide variety of finishes with this material.

There are also different types of marble mixtures, the composition of which is different not only by the grain fraction and its hue, but also by the composition of the filler used. These materials include granite-marble plaster, Venetian and mosaic varieties.

The granite-marble mixture is composed of granite fraction, in addition to marble chips. This significantly affects the strength characteristics of the coating, making it resistant to mechanical damage. However, the addition of granite chips in the composition of the mixture affects the degree of adhesion to the polymer binder component, it becomes lower.

Facade marble plaster is often granite-marble because of its high mechanical stability. It is also used for finishing the outer surfaces of basements and arched structures. In this case, it is more economical to choose materials in which the cementitious component M500 is the binder component.

Marble Venetian plaster as a filler includes a dust fraction of marble with the addition of granite, quartz, malachite or other stones. The quantitative ratio of the components of the mixture significantly affects the quality characteristics of the coating and its decorative appearance. The smaller the milled components, the smoother the drawing, and the surface is smoother.

The binder of the Venetian variety of material has been slaked lime for some time. With modern production technologies, acrylic resins are more often used as a binding element. Pigment of both organic and inorganic origin is also added.

The quality of the finish and the appearance of the surface covered with marble plaster depends on compliance with the technology of its application. In this case, the sequence of the following operations should be observed:

  • surface preparation;
  • primer coating;
  • decorating the surface with a marble layer.

Consider how these stages of work.

Surface preparation

Any surface on which the decorating layer will be applied should be cleaned of dirt and grease. To cut or hammer down all the protruding parts. Cover cracks and dents with a compound with good adhesion to the base. In the case of large irregularities need to lay a reinforcing mesh. After applying the rough putty, the base should be sanded.
